The History of Labor Day 2023
The first Labor Day holiday was observed in 1882 with a parade in New York City, but the question of who first proposed the concept of a holiday honouring workers remains contentious more than a century later.
Congress did not recognise the holiday until the 1894 Pullman Palace Car Company strike, which History.com describes as a “watershed moment” in American labour history.
The strike prompted the deployment of federal forces to quell rioters in the city. A few days later, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation designating Labour Day, the first Monday in September, a federal holiday.
Massachusetts has one of the nation’s greatest Labour Day parades. With the exception of 2020, Marlborough’s annual significant event dates back to the post-World War II era and has been held annually since.
