California Unemployment Benefits 2024: Since millions of people are still unemployed and subsidies are needed to help those looking for job, unemployment continues to be one of the hardest issues for taxpayers to address.
The Employment Development Department (EDD) is hopeful that the recent wave of scams involving unemployment and disability benefits will come to a stop with the appointment of a new contractor.
CalMatters reports that the EDD will start informing 850,000 beneficiaries of the new payment processor, Money Network.
New Money Network debit cards will be issued to recipients of EDD paid leave, disability, and unemployment payments in mid-January. On February 15, payments on these cards will formally start.
The deadline for using the funds on Bank of America EDD debit cards is April 15. Both security chips and tap-to-pay features, which are typical of consumer credit cards, will be available on the new EDD cards.

What was the outcome of the Covid rent alleviation initiative?
The $5.2 billion initiative was started in 2021 to assist Californians in paying off debt they had accrued from rentals during the epidemic. However, CalMatters reports that there are not enough money left for the programme to support those impacted by the Covid epidemic in 2019 and 2021.
Even though it ceased accepting new applications in 2022, there are currently over 70,000 families who have unfinished applications. Only little more than 14,000 people can be covered by the program’s budget, which means that 80% of all applicants will not be accepted.
