Chapter 35 VA Payment Schedule October: Chapter 35 of the VA program, called Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA), helps veterans’ dependents who qualify pay for school. This program helps pay for a range of learning and training options, such as trade schools, colleges, apprenticeships, and training on the job.
It’s important to stay updated on the latest payment rates, which change annually. Starting October 1, 2024, through September 30, 2025, the new rates are as follows:
- Full-time enrollment at a college or university: $1,536.00 per month.
- Three-quarter time enrollment: $1,214.00 per month.
- Half-time enrollment: $890.00 per month.
- If enrolled more than quarter-time but less than half-time, you can still receive $890.00 per month, limited to your tuition and fees.
- For those enrolled quarter-time or less, the monthly maximum is $384.00, equating to the total cost of tuition and fees.
If you’re the child or surviving spouse of a Veteran or service member who has died, is captured or missing, or has a service-connected disability, you may be eligible for DEA—also called Chapter 35.

Your payment amount depends on your enrollment status and the type of education or training you pursue.
The same is true for students in degree programs other than college, like those at trade and vocational schools. Your monthly payments will be split up based on how many days you are enrolled, and the amount you get will depend on how many scheduled hours you worked.
If, for example, you start school in the middle of the month, you will only be charged for the days you were enrolled. You will still get some of the full monthly rate. So, the monthly rate stays at $1,536.00 for full-time students. If you’re not a full-time student, the rate goes down.

An amount of $975.00 is paid every month for the first six months of on-the-job training or apprenticeship programs. From months 13 to 18, the payment drops even more, to $481.00. From months 7 to 12, it dropped to $733.00. After 19 months, the rate is $245.00 a month. Because the payments are based on the idea that you work at least 120 hours per month, if you work less than that, you will get less money.

The same applies to students in trade and vocational schools. Your monthly payment will depend on your enrollment days and hours worked. If you start school mid-month, you’ll only be charged for the days you were enrolled, but you will receive a full month’s payment. The full-time student rate remains 1,536 per month, while part-time rates decrease.
For on-the-job training or apprenticeships, payments are as follows:
- 975 per month for the first six months, dropping to $733 from months 7 to 12, and $481 from months 13 to 18.
- After 19 months, the rate decreases to $245 per month. If you work less than 120 hours a month, your payment will be reduced accordingly.
