Chase Sapphire Reserve Eligibility Explained For Sapphire Preferred Users

Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders may still qualify for the Sapphire Reserve welcome bonus if they have never held the Reserve card or previously earned its signup reward.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Eligibility: Chase is now pushing a big new bonus on the Sapphire Reserve. The card is showing a limited-time offer of 150,000 points after $6,000 in purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. Chase also says the value of those points can be around $3,000 for select flights and hotels through Chase Travel.

For people who already carry the Chase Sapphire Preferred, the key question is simple: can they still get this new Reserve offer? In many cases, yes. Chase says Sapphire Preferred cardmembers may be able to move to Sapphire Reserve, but the welcome bonus is for new account owners. Chase also says cardmembers who upgrade are not eligible for the welcome bonus.

Who can get it?

The cleanest path is this. If you have never held the Sapphire Reserve and have never earned a bonus on it, you are generally eligible for the current Sapphire Reserve welcome offer, even if you already have the Sapphire Preferred and have earned that card’s bonus. That is the main rule that matters here.

  • Chase 5/24 Rule: If you opened 5 or more new credit cards in the last 24 months, Chase will most likely reject your Sapphire Reserve application. This rule usually counts cards from all banks, not just Chase. Business cards normally do not count.
  • You Cannot Already Have Sapphire Reserve: If you already own an active Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you cannot apply again for another one.
  • Sapphire Reserve Bonus Before: People who already received a Sapphire Reserve welcome bonus earlier usually cannot get the bonus again.
  • Sapphire Reserve Earlier: Even if you closed the card later, Chase may still not allow you to get the current welcome offer again if you had the card in the past.
  • Good Credit Score: You need a strong credit history to improve approval chances. Credit score of around 740 or higher for better chances of getting approved.

If you are under the 5/24 limit, never had Sapphire Reserve before and have a strong credit score, your approval chances are much better.

What to Check before Applying

Before applying, it helps to make sure you do not already have an open Sapphire Reserve account. It also helps to remember that if you upgrade from Sapphire Preferred to Sapphire Reserve, Chase says you will not get the new-card welcome bonus. So the bonus is really meant for people starting fresh with the Reserve, not for people doing a product change.

The Reserve itself is packed with travel perks on Chase’s official page, including travel credits and airport lounge access benefits. Chase also highlights statement credits and travel protections on the card, which is why many people still want it even with the annual fee.

Basically, if you already have Sapphire Preferred, you are not blocked just because you own that card. The real deal-breakers are whether you have already had Sapphire Reserve, already earned its bonus, are above 5/24, or are trying to get the card through an upgrade instead of a new application.
