SSA Appointment Under New Identity Verification: The Social Security Administration (SSA) is making big changes to keep your information safe and protect people from fraud. Starting soon, anyone who wants to apply for benefits, update their bank details, or make other changes will need to follow stricter steps to prove their identity.
These changes will roll out over two weeks. By March 31, 2025, people who cannot use their online my Social Security account will need to visit a local SSA office to verify their identity in person. The SSA is also speeding up the process for changing direct deposit information. Instead of taking 30 days, it will now take just one business day.

If you cannot use the online my Social Security platform, you will need to visit a local SSA office. To avoid long waits, the SSA recommends scheduling an appointment before you go.
You can make an appointment by calling +1 800-772-1213. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you can call TTY +1 800-325-0778.
Many tasks, like applying for benefits, replacing a Social Security card, updating your contact information, or checking your application status, can still be done online. However, some tasks, like changing your name or updating direct deposit details, may require an in-person visit if they cannot be completed online.
Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek said the SSA is working hard to improve security while making services faster and better.
“Americans deserve to have their Social Security records protected with the utmost integrity and vigilance,” said Dudek. “For far too long, the agency has used antiquated methods for proving identity. Social Security can better protect Americans while expediting service.”

During the transition, SSA employees are being trained to handle the new rules. When you visit a local office, you will need to show valid identification to complete your tasks.
If you start a claim for benefits over the phone, you will still need to verify your identity in person before the claim is finalized.

The SSA is also using a new tool called the Account Verification Service (AVS). This tool, developed by the Department of Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service, helps verify bank details instantly to prevent fraud.
