Chapter 30 VA MGIB-AD program: The Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD) program helps active-duty military members pay for their education and training. This program, also known as Chapter 30, offers financial support for different types of programs, including higher education, trade schools, and on-the-job training.
Chapter 30 VA MGIB-AD program
The MGIB-AD program provides money to help pay for tuition and fees. If you enroll in a higher education program or a trade school full-time, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will give you $2,438 per month. But if you attend 3/4-time, the amount you receive will be less.

How Much Will You Get for 3/4-Time Enrollment?
If you attend a higher education program or a trade school at 3/4-time, the VA will reduce your monthly benefit to $1,828.50 for each full month you are enrolled.
If you don’t attend for a full month, the amount will be even lower. For example, if your classes start on the 20th of the month, you’ll only get one-third of the monthly benefit. In this case, your payment for the first month would be $609.50.
What About On-the-Job Training or Apprenticeships?
For on-the-job training or apprenticeships, the VA uses a different payment system. The amount you receive decreases the longer you are in the program. Here’s how it works:
- Between 1 and 6 months, you receive $1,828.50 for each full month.
- Between 7 and 12 months, you receive $1,340.90 for each full month.
- After the first year, you receive $853.30 for each full month.
