Link your PAN and Aadhaar by June 30: The Indian income tax department has declared that the deadline for linking Aadhaar and PAN cards is June 30. The Department of income tax added that failure to comply will result in the respective PAN cards becoming invalid on July 1.
The original deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar was March 31, 2023, but it was extended to June 30, 2023.
Although the deadline has been extended multiple times in the past, users may lose access to mutual fund and stock investment if the PAN is deactivated. This linkage is mandated for investment purposes by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regulations. In addition, tax returns cannot be lodged without a PAN.
The PAN may be reactivated after the deadline, but there will be a Rs 1,000 penalty fee.
Exceptions to this rule include “those residing in specified states, a non-resident according to the Act, an individual who is not a citizen of India, or individuals aged 80 years or older at any time during the preceding year,” according to a circular issued by the income tax department in March 2023.
