March 2024 SNAP Benefits: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps a lot of people in the US who don’t have enough food to eat. Even though SNAP is a government program, each state has its own way of running it. This is due to things like local offices, the economy, and how benefits are determined.
When food stamps changed from paper stamps to electronic benefits transfer cards (EBT) in 1990, it became easier for people to apply. Each state has its own way of running the food card program.
It’s known as CalFresh in California and Lone Star Card in Texas. For people who have EBT cards, they can buy certain kinds of food every month.
Which state gets the most money from SNAP?
Hawaii gets the most SNAP money, $385 for each family member. Since these things are different, SNAP affects people and families in many different ways across the country.
Cali had 4,627,700 SNAP users in 2022, which was the most of any state. Second place went to Texas, and third place went to Florida. The most people using SNAP were in New Mexico, where 25% of people used it.
People who get EBT cards can buy food and other things they need at gas stations, grocery stores, food shops, and even farmers’ markets.
