‘No Tax on Tips Act’ Explained: Big Benefits Coming for Workers and Businesses

The 'No Tax on Tips Act' passed the Senate unanimously, letting tipped workers keep all their tips tax-free. It aims to help millions in service jobs and boost businesses too.

No Tax on Tips Act: The U.S. Senate just passed a new law called the “No Tax on Tips Act” with a rare vote of 100-0. This law is a big part of President Donald Trump’s plan to help workers who depend on tips to make money. It could change things a lot for millions of Americans who work in jobs where tipping is normal.

This law will let workers like waiters, bartenders, hotel staff, and delivery drivers keep all the money they get as tips without paying federal income tax on it. This means if they get tips in cash, on cards, or by check, they don’t have to pay taxes on those tips anymore. The law will help those who make less than $160,000 in 2025, and it will stay in place until the end of 2028.

Who Benefits from the New Law?

Most people who get tips at restaurants and hotels will see a difference. But the law also helps workers in other places where tipping is common, like hair salons, nail salons, and spas. Employers in these places will get a tax credit for the tips they give to their workers. This credit already existed for food and drink places but now it’s expanded. The Treasury Secretary will decide which jobs qualify for this credit, so even more workers might get help.

What Lawmakers Say?

This law was first suggested by Senator Ted Cruz from Texas in January. It quickly got support from both Republicans and Democrats. Some important Democratic senators from Nevada, where tipping is a big part of the economy, also helped push the law forward.

Senator Cruz said, “President Trump made a promise to the American people that he would eliminate taxes on tips. In Congress, I formed a bipartisan, bicameral coalition to get that done… This legislation will have a lasting impact on millions of Americans by protecting the hard-earned dollars of blue-collar workers, the very people who are living paycheck-to-paycheck.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also spoke out, saying, “Working Americans – from servers, to bartenders, delivery drivers, and everything in between – work hard for every dollar they earn and are the ones who deserve tax relief, not the ultra-rich.”

Even though the Senate has approved the bill, it still needs to be passed by the House of Representatives before it can become law. Many believe it will pass there too because of the strong support it has.

If the president signs it into law, the “No Tax on Tips Act” will be one of the biggest tax breaks for people who work hourly jobs or in the service industry in recent years. This law could also change how companies hire workers and manage payroll, and it might even affect the economy in areas where service jobs are very common.
