RRSP Withdrawal Tax Calculator

RRSP Withdrawal Tax Calculator: Taking money out of an RRSP can give you cash when you need it, but it can also increase your taxable income for the year. Because of this, the amount you receive in your bank account may be less than the amount you ask to withdraw.

A simple RRSP withdrawal tax calculator can help you get a rough idea of how much tax may be withheld and how much money you could actually receive. But the amount withheld by the bank isn’t always the same as your final tax bill.

How RRSP withdrawal tax works in Canada

For a normal RRSP withdrawal, the financial institution usually takes tax from the amount before giving you the remaining money. CRA says, “When you withdraw funds from your RRSP, your financial institution withholds the tax.”

RRSP withdrawal amountFederal withholding rateQuebec federal withholding rate
Up to $5,00010%5%
More than $5,000 and up to $15,00020%10%
More than $15,00030%15%

These rates are used for withholding at the time of withdrawal. For Quebec, provincial tax is also withheld under separate rules.

Like if you take out $5,000 from your RRSP and the 10% withholding rate applies, about $500 could be withheld. You’d receive about $4,500. If you withdraw $10,000, the withholding would generally be $2,000, leaving about $8,000.

A common mistake is to think that this withholding amount is the final tax. It isn’t always. CRA says, “The tax that was withheld may not always be enough to account for the tax you owe at your tax bracket.”

Your RRSP withdrawal is generally added to your income for the year. The withdrawal is reported on line 12900 of your tax return and the tax already deducted can be claimed on line 43700.

How to use an RRSP withdrawal tax calculator

  • Enter your RRSP withdrawal amount.
  • Add your other expected income for the year. This can include salary, pension income and other taxable income.
  • Check your province or territory because provincial tax rates are different.
  • Find your estimated tax before the RRSP withdrawal.
  • Calculate your estimated tax again after adding the RRSP withdrawal.
  • The increase between the two amounts gives you a better estimate of the extra income tax caused by the withdrawal.
  • Compare that amount with the tax already withheld by your financial institution.

This method is better than simply taking one tax percentage and applying it to your entire withdrawal. Canada uses tax brackets, so different parts of your income can be taxed at different rates. For 2026, the federal income tax rates range from 14% to 33%, with the first federal bracket applying to taxable income up to $58,523. Provincial or territorial income tax is added on top of federal tax.

For example, suppose your income before the RRSP withdrawal is already fairly high. Adding another $20,000 could push part of your income into a higher tax bracket. In that case, the final tax on the withdrawal could be higher than the amount the bank withheld.

Important RRSP withdrawal rules to know

A regular RRSP withdrawal is normally taxable in the year you receive the money. Your financial institution should provide a T4RSP slip showing the withdrawal and the tax that was withheld.

There are also special cases where RRSP money can be taken out without the usual withholding tax. One example is the Home Buyers’ Plan. Another is the Lifelong Learning Plan when you meet the required conditions. Eligible amounts under these plans aren’t included as income when they are withdrawn.

The Lifelong Learning Plan has its own limits. You can generally withdraw up to $10,000 in one calendar year and up to $20,000 during a participation period. These amounts normally have to be repaid over the required repayment period.

Another point to remember is age. An RRSP has to mature by the end of the year you turn 71. By then, you generally need to move the money to an option such as a RRIF or use another permitted retirement income option.

RRSP withdrawal$10,000
Typical withholding rate20%
Tax withheld$2,000
Amount received$8,000
Possible final taxDepends on total annual income and province

The $8,000 above is only the amount left after the initial withholding. Your final tax situation could be different when you file your return because the $10,000 withdrawal becomes part of your taxable income.

For a more accurate 2026 estimate, you should include your expected yearly income, province, RRSP withdrawal amount and other major deductions or credits. The CRA also publishes its current 2026 federal and provincial tax brackets, which can be used to make the estimate more realistic.
