QDD works differently. People do not apply for QDD separately. Instead, Social Security uses a computer model to look at new claims and flag the ones that are most likely to be approved and have medical evidence that should be easy to get. Those claims are then moved forward faster. This is why a clear application matters so much. Missing doctor records, weak treatment history, or extra exams can slow everything down.
The Rules still stay the same
Even if a claim is fast-tracked, the person still has to meet the normal SSDI rules. The condition must last at least 12 months or be expected to lead to death. The person also needs enough work history under Social Security rules. In general, most people need 40 credits, and 20 of those credits must have been earned in the 10 years before the disability began. Younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.
The earnings rules also matter in 2026. Social Security says the monthly substantial gainful activity, or SGA, limit is $1,690 for people who are not blind. For people who are considered blind under Social Security rules, the 2026 SGA limit is $2,830. If a person is working and earning above those levels, they usually will not be found disabled under SSDI rules.
