The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs gives burial help to some families. This money does not always pay for everything, but it can still take away part of the cost. How Much Money Does the VA Pay?
The amount depends on the kind of death and where the veteran is buried.
- For a service-connected death, the VA can pay up to $2,000 toward burial costs.
- For a non-service-connected death, the VA can pay up to $978 for burial and funeral expenses for deaths on or after October 1, 2024.
- If the veteran is not buried in a national cemetery, the VA can also pay a plot or interment allowance of up to $978.
The VA also says there is a temporary expanded burial benefit for certain veterans who were discharged from VA care to receive hospice care at home and died between July 1, 2025, and October 1, 2026.
These benefits are not only for one kind of person. The VA says the claim can usually be filed by a surviving spouse, a family member, an executor of the estate, or another person who actually paid the funeral and burial bills. The VA also says burial benefits may apply to all legal burial types, including cremation, burial at sea, and even donating remains to a medical school.
Other Burial and Memorial Benefits
The burial allowance is only one part of the help. Some eligible veterans may also be buried in a VA national cemetery. In many cases, the family can get a gravesite, grave opening and closing, perpetual care, and a government headstone or marker at no cost. Families may also receive a burial flag and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. Military funeral honors may also be given. Those honors usually include the folding and handing over of the United States flag and the playing of “Taps”.

Families who choose a private cemetery may still qualify for some VA items, like a headstone, a marker or medallion in some cases, and a burial flag if the rules are met. The VA says these benefits exist to honor the veteran’s service and help the family with the final costs.
How to Apply?
To ask for burial benefits, the VA says to fill out VA Form 21P-530EZ, which is the Application for Burial Benefits. People can apply online or send the form by mail to the Pension Intake Center in Janesville, Wisconsin.
The VA also says to include supporting papers such as a death certificate, funeral or burial receipts, proof of payment, and military service records if the VA does not already have them. Families are told to file as soon as they can, because the process can take time.
The VA says that veterans’ groups, funeral directors, and accredited Veterans Service Officers, or VSOs, can help families understand the rules and finish the claim the right way. For many families, this help can make a painful time feel a little less hard.
