Some SSDI applicants may receive faster decisions through Compassionate Allowances or Quick Disability Determinations. Here is how these fast-track systems work and what applicants need for approval.

SSDI Application Approval: A Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, claim can take a long time to finish. The Social Security Administration says an initial disability decision usually takes 6 to 8 months. That wait can be hard for people who cannot work anymore and need help fast. But there are two special fast-track paths for some serious cases. They are called Compassionate Allowances, or CAL, and Quick Disability Determinations, or QDD. The SSA says these systems are made to speed up decisions while still keeping the process accurate.
Compassionate Allowances are for very serious medical problems that clearly meet Social Security’s disability rules. The SSA says these cases usually involve certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and rare diseases that affect children. In these claims, the diagnosis itself can be enough to show that the person meets the disability standard when the medical proof is strong. The agency also says these cases can be approved “in a matter of days instead of months.”

QDD works differently. People do not apply for QDD separately. Instead, Social Security uses a computer model to look at new claims and flag the ones that are most likely to be approved and have medical evidence that should be easy to get. Those claims are then moved forward faster. This is why a clear application matters so much. Missing doctor records, weak treatment history, or extra exams can slow everything down.
Even if a claim is fast-tracked, the person still has to meet the normal SSDI rules. The condition must last at least 12 months or be expected to lead to death. The person also needs enough work history under Social Security rules. In general, most people need 40 credits, and 20 of those credits must have been earned in the 10 years before the disability began. Younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.
The earnings rules also matter in 2026. Social Security says the monthly substantial gainful activity, or SGA, limit is $1,690 for people who are not blind. For people who are considered blind under Social Security rules, the 2026 SGA limit is $2,830. If a person is working and earning above those levels, they usually will not be found disabled under SSDI rules.

The fastest real path is not a shortcut around the rules. It is a complete application with strong medical proof. That is what gives CAL and QDD a chance to help. These programs can move the strongest serious claims ahead much faster, but they cannot turn a weak or ineligible claim into an approval. When the evidence is solid and the condition fits the rules, the process can be much quicker for people who need help the most.
