Texas Credit Union Industry in 2026

Texas has a large credit-union scene. That helps explain why so many institutions show up in the wider financial-services world.

In the first quarter of 2026, NCUA reported 380 federal credit unions in Texas. Those credit unions served roughly 10.5 million members. Their total assets came to about $162.8 billion.

For the year that ended in the first quarter of 2026, Texas credit unions hit a median annual asset gain of 2.3%. This figure comes from NCUA’s quarterly state numbers.

Even so, that pace was not as fast as the national median of 2.8%. Still, the Texas market stayed very large.

What Makes a Credit Union “Large”?

When people look up the biggest credit unions in Texas, they might not mean the same thing.

  • Assets total: This is the metric used in the earlier list. It counts the credit union’s money and holdings. It also helps show overall size in one number.
  • Members: A credit union can hold a lot of members even if its assets are not #1. GECU, for instance, shows more than 444,000 members in the Q1 2026 figures. That places it near the top by membership. Yet it sits at seventh when you look at assets.
  • Branches: Where you can walk in or call in can matter. A credit union with a smaller asset amount may still be the easier choice if it has a branch close to you.
  • How it performs: Bigger size does not guarantee the best fit for every person. You might want to check savings rates, loan APRs, common charges, digital tools, branch access, and who can join.

Is Top Credit Union In Texas Always The Best?

Not always. A credit union with more assets is larger on paper. But that does not mean it will offer the lowest mortgage rate, the top savings yield, or the best day-to-day help.

For example, a person shopping for an auto loan may care most about the current APR. Another member may want more nearby branches. Someone else may choose based on mobile features and apps.
