RE Engine

RE Engine: For years many Resident Evil fans thought they knew what the “RE” in RE Engine meant. Since Capcom first used the engine for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, it seemed natural to believe that RE simply stood for Resident Evil.

But that isn’t the real meaning. Capcom has confirmed that the name comes from “Reach for the Moon.” The company’s own information explains that the words represent its goal of taking on difficult challenges and trying to achieve things that may look impossible.

The RE Engine Logo was the Clue All Along

The funny part is that Capcom had already placed the answer in the engine’s logo. The RE Engine logo has a hand reaching towards a moon. That image was designed around the same “Reach for the Moon” idea. So the clue was sitting there in front of players while many people still connected the letters to Resident Evil.

The confusion is also understandable because the engine’s first major public use was Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The game helped introduce the technology to players and made the RE Engine name closely connected with the horror series.

However, the connection between “RE” and Resident Evil is actually just a coincidence. In Japan, the Resident Evil series is known as Biohazard, which makes the Resident Evil explanation for the letters even less likely.

From Resident Evil 7 To Capcom’s Main Engine

What started as technology for Resident Evil 7 became much bigger over time. Capcom later used the RE Engine for the Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 remakes, along with Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil Requiem.

It also moved well outside horror games. Devil May Cry 5, Monster Hunter Rise, Street Fighter 6, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Monster Hunter Wilds and Pragmata are among the other Capcom titles made with the engine.

Capcom says the engine can support very different types of games, including horror, fighting and hunting titles. The company also says around 200 engineers work in its R&D foundational technology team, with around 160 focused on engine development.
