Obsidian is already loaded with note-taking capabilities. But just because something is functional does not mean that it should not be improved. Obsidian modules exist for this specific purpose.
Plugins for Obsidian can improve your note-taking experience and increase your productivity. With the addition of certain modules, Obsidian can be used for purposes other than note-taking. Let’s examine the various techniques for installing Obsidian plugins.
Utilize the Community Plugins Browser (Method 1)
The simplest method for adding plugins to your Obsidian workspace is through the community plugins browser. Community plugins are plugins that have been approved by the Obsidian team, and you can acquire them directly from the Obsidian app.
- Using this procedure, you can install Obsidian plugins as follows:
- Launch Obsidian and select the settings icon in the lower-left corner of the interface.
- Select the tab labeled Community Plugins.
- Click the Enable community extensions link.
- Select Browse.
- Locate and select the plugin to activate. We’re going to install the Obsidian Kanban plugin.
- To add a plugin to your workspace, click the Install icon on its page.
- Once the plugin has been installed, you can enable it from the same page by selecting Enable.
You can always enable and disable plugins through the settings. Simply navigate to the tab titled Community Plugins and toggle the switch next to the plugin’s name.
Method 2: Install Obsidian Plugins manually
It takes the Obsidian staff some time to review and verify plugins, so newer plugins may not be available directly from Obsidian. All Obsidian plugins, regardless of whether they are on the community plugins list, are hosted on GitHub and can be downloaded and installed manually.
Whether the plugin you want isn’t available in the community plugins or the plugin browser is malfunctioning, you can install Obsidian plugins with confidence using this method. This is how:
- Using GitHub, locate the plugin you wish to install.
- Download the plugin’s most recent version.
- Extract the plugin files to a local directory.
- Go to the Obsidian Settings menu.
- The Community plugins page.
- To access the folder containing your Obsidian plugins, click the folder icon next to Installed plugins.
- Copy the extracted plugin folder to the plugins location in Obsidian.
Note that you must transfer the folder containing the plugin files, not the plugin files themselves, to the plugins folder. Typically, the folder will contain three files. Your plugins folder should resemble the image above, with distinct folders for each plugin.
After copying the plugin files, you can activate it by toggling the switch next to the plugin’s name on the Community plugins tab of Obsidian.
Plugins Enhance the Performance of Obsidian
You can install plugins to extend the functionality of Obsidian, which is one of its finest characteristics. The straightforward process of installing modules in Obsidian can help you customize your workspace and increase your productivity.
Don’t be hesitant to experiment with plugins, as they can enhance your note-taking experience.
