Samsung Galaxy S24: Samsung sent out press passes for its next Galaxy Unpacked show on January 2. The event will take place in San Jose, California, on January 17. You can watch a broadcast of the event on Samsung’s website and YouTube starting at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET.

The invite has three gray forms that look like stars. They don’t seem like much at first, but they’re probably about to hint at a few things. To begin, the color is probably a reference to the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s reported gray titanium finish. Second, the shapes look like a sneak peek at the logo for Samsung’s new “Galaxy AI” AI features, which you can learn more about below.

We think Samsung will reveal the Galaxy S24 series on January 17. Soon after, preorders and public sales will likely start.

You might not know whether to buy a Galaxy S23 right now or wait a few more days for the S24 line. Here are some tips that should help you decide.

Price of the Samsung Galaxy S24

Samsung’s Galaxy phones have had mostly fixed prices over the past few years. In the U.S., the base S23 model costs $800, the S23 Plus model costs $1,000, and the S23 Ultra model costs around $1,200.

It looks like Samsung is going to keep the S24 series’ prices the same as they were before. This is in contrast to Apple and Google, which raised the prices of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Google Pixel 8 series by $100. The base Galaxy S24 will cost $800, the S24 Plus will cost $1,000, and the top-of-the-line S24 Ultra will cost at least $1,200. Even though the phones will still be pricey, we won’t complain about not having to pay more for them.

Still, at least one story says the Galaxy S24 series might cost less than the S23 series. Galaxy Club says that the S24 and S24 Plus will cost 50 euros less than the S23, but the S24 Ultra will cost 50 euros more in comparison. While European prices don’t directly apply to the U.S. market, here’s how S24 prices might work out if we use this reasoning:

  • Galaxy S24 costs $700.
  • $950 for the Galaxy S24 Plus
  • $1,250 for the Galaxy S24 Ultra

Without official word from Samsung, this is hard to pin down. We’ll have to wait until January 17 to know for sure what’s going on.

Samsung Galaxy S24: how it looks

In the past few months, there have been a few reports that the S24 line will get some design changes. In September, Smartprix and @OnLeaks shared what they said were mockups of the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Ultra. GizNext also sent us images of the Galaxy S24 Plus in early October.

It looks like the screens will be flat this time, instead of having curved ends like the last model. Since there is no longer any curved glass, the bezels will get thinner and thinner. The Galaxy S24 Ultra may have the thinnest bezels of any Samsung smartphone to date. After this, the S24 series might look a lot like the S23 series. Smartprix says that the S24 Ultra will likely have flat metal side bars with rounded ends, the same as the S23 Ultra.

The Elec says that the Galaxy S24 Ultra might have a titanium body for the first time, just like the iPhone 15 Pro series. Without a question, this would make the Galaxy S24 Ultra a lot lighter, maybe even by as much as 10%. Evan Blass says that Armor Aluminum 2.0 could be used on the other two versions of the S24.

It is important to note, though, that the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra should look a lot like the current models.

Early in December, we got the “best look yet” at the Galaxy S24 series. It was a few new renders that look like marketing photos of the phones that got out. A new color or two and a different material for the frame of the Galaxy S24 Ultra are the only big changes. One interesting thing is that the S24 Ultra now comes in a beautiful new yellow color.

A leak from @MysteryLupin on X (which used to be Twitter) shows more colors for the S24 series. The colors that look like they will be here are black, gray, yellow, and violet. Through SIM card tray parts for the S24 and S24 Plus, another report from @rquandt shows more possible S24 colors. One of these leaked SIM card trays is a violet-like purple color, while the other is a bright orange or rose-gold color. This could also mean that there are some colors that are only available on Samsung.com. For the S23 series, these were graphite and lime green.

Ross Young is a leaker who has been right about color predictions in the past. He thinks that the S24 series will come in black, gray, violet, and yellow, as well as orange, light blue, and light green that are only available from Samsung.

Even higher-resolution pictures of the whole Galaxy S24 line were leaked on December 29. The renders above don’t tell us anything new about the phones, but they are some of the best S24 pictures that have been shared online.

What’s in the Samsung Galaxy S24

A few more important phone specs from this year have been shared. It’s always important to keep in mind that details and reports might not match up exactly with the real specs, especially this close to the release date. But as we get closer to the big show, the real numbers should come out.

Ice Universe said on X, which used to be Twitter, that the Galaxy S24 Ultra should have a 6.8-inch WQHD screen with a 1440p resolution. Another leaker, Evan Blass, says that the S24 Plus will have a 6.7-inch screen and the S24 will have a 6.2-inch screen. Blass also says that all three screens will be Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ and have a maximum brightness of 2,600 nits. These screens are bigger than the S23 and S23 Plus, which have 6.1-inch and 6.6-inch screens, respectively.

Samsung didn’t use its Exynos chipsets in any of the S23 models, which is one of the most surprising things about the line. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip was used instead in every case. Samsung could go back to its roots with the S24 series and use both Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chips and Exynos chips.

Through The Elec, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon shared this news. He said that the chip used for the S24 and S24 Plus types will depend on where they are sold. The S24 Ultra, on the other hand, will always come with a Qualcomm chip.

Cameras on the Samsung Galaxy S24

It looks like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is getting a much better camera. It was leaked by user @chunvn8888 on X (formerly Twitter) that the S24 Ultra would have four cameras on the back. There would be a 200MP main camera, 50MP and 10MP zoom cameras, and a 12MP ultrawide camera. The sensors in these cameras would also be better, and the main lens would be 200MP.

Reports earlier said that with a higher sensor resolution, the highest zoom could drop to 5x. However, a story from The Elec says that Samsung will keep the 10x sensor and add a new 5x choice.

The camera specs for the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus were leaked again by Evan Blass (@evleaks on X). The main lens would be 50MP, and there would be dual 2x and 3x zoom lenses and 30x Space Zoom. It’s also true, according to the leaker, that the S24 Ultra will have a 200MP main camera with 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x quad telephoto lenses and a 100x highest zoom.

But the pictures that were in Blass’s tweet have been taken down because they are protected by copyright laws.

You might also be able to quickly access the Instagram camera on the Galaxy S24 series.

Battery for Samsung Galaxy S24

Most of the time, but not always, a smartphone’s battery lasts longer when it’s bigger. All three Galaxy S24 models might get better if this keeps up until 2024.

Galaxy Club, a Dutch news site, says that the Galaxy S24 will have a 4,000 mAh battery, the same size as the Galaxy S21. There are 3,700 mAh batteries in the Galaxy S22 and 3,900 mAh batteries in the Galaxy S23.

The S24 Plus has a 4,900 mAh battery, which is a great deal compared to the S23 Plus’s 4,700 mAh cell. On the other hand, reports say that the S24 Ultra will keep its 5,000 mAh capacity.

Software and patches for the Samsung Galaxy S24

Finally, when it comes to software, all Galaxy S24 phones should come with Android 14 and either Samsung One UI 6 or 6.1 already installed. For the S23 line, the update to Android 14 has just begun to show up.

It will be interesting to see how many years of Android patches Samsung will give the S24. Samsung gives the Galaxy S23 four years of Android patches, which is a good deal. But this isn’t even close to what Google says they will do for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro: fix them for at least seven years. Is Samsung going to match this? We hope so, but it’s hard to say for sure.

Artificial intelligence in the Samsung Galaxy S24

The Korea Times says that the Galaxy S24 series will likely have a new feature called Samsung Gauss, which is a custom generating AI model. Samsung showed off Gauss at the beginning of November, and the model runs in part on a device. It was named for the famous scientist Carl Friedrich Gauss, who came up with the idea of normal distribution.

There are three parts to Samsung Gauss: Samsung Gauss Language can make writing, translate languages, and answer questions; Samsung Gauss Code makes it easy for developers to write and change code; and Samsung Gauss Image is a tool for making images. As ChatGPT, Google Bard, and other AI apps become more popular, Gauss would be a great addition to the Galaxy S24 family. This isn’t a surprise at all.

We now know even more about what to expect from Samsung’s AI features in the S24 series thanks to new rumors. AI will definitely be able to translate phone calls in real time. Another leak says there will be creative AI wallpaper, like the kind we have on the Google Pixel 8 line right now. Because it uses Google’s AI system, it looks like what Google has on the Pixel 8. If so, it will be limited in the same ways that the Pixel 8’s feature is limited in that it will only let you use certain themes and groups for the tasks.

Samsung will also have an AI-powered picture editor that works like Google’s Magic Editor and lets you move people, pets, and things in the Samsung Gallery app. Even more could be done; you could drag people from one picture to another.

Samsung Notes could also be improved with AI. It could have an auto-format tool that uses AI to turn blocks of text into bullet point lists to make the writing move better when it needs to. With Samsung One UI 6.1, the lock screen may get new weather and picture features as well.
