It was Danville High School that he attended. Growing up, Van Dyke thought about going into ministry since his mother came from a very religious family. In 1944, he left high school to enlist in the US Air Force during World War II. He finally got accepted into the army as a radio announcer after a lot of work.

In the late 1940s, he was employed in Danville as a radio DJ. In New Orleans, on what is now known as N.B.C., WDSU-TV New Orleans Channel 6 hosted a comedy show to launch his television career. He made his network television debut in “James’ Chance of a Lifetime” (1954). He debuted on Broadway in the play “The Girls Against the Boys” in November 1959. When Van Dyke was contacted in 1961 about appearing in the sitcom “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” he gave a positive response.

He landed his first movie role in 1963, playing Albert Peterson in the “Bye Bye Birdie” movie. Not long after, he was given two roles in Walt Disney’s “Mary Poppins.” The American superstar starred in the sitcom “The New Dick Van Dyke Show” from 1971 to 1974 as a local talk show host. He provided the voice for “Scooby-Doo Meets Dick Van Dyke,” the last episode of Hanna-Barbera’s “The New Scooby-Doo Movies,” in 1973. Van Dyke made a comeback to humor in 1976 with his sketch comedy program “Van Dyke and Company.”

For the rest of the decade, he worked mostly on television pictures. He and his son Barry Van made an appearance in an episode of the television program “Airwolf” in 1987. Two years later, he appeared on “The Golden Girls” on N.B.C. He has acted in a number of popular movies, such as “Murder 101” (2003) and “Dick Tracy” (1990). He also worked on a duet single with actress Jane Lynch.

Van Dyke wed former Margerie Willett on the radio program “Bride and Groom” on February 12, 1948. The couple had four children: Christian, Stacy, Barry, and Carrie Beth, before divorcing in 1984. Following that, the actor moved in with his long-term partner of nearly three decades, Michelle Triola. 2009 saw Triola’s passing.

He tied the knot with makeup artist Arlene Silver on February 29, 2012. He has seven grandchildren under his care. Throughout a significant portion of his adult life, the American celebrity was an avid smoker and drinker. In 2013, he acknowledged that he had been dealing with neurological issues for the preceding seven years.

His high school diploma arrived late.

It wasn’t until 2004 that he obtained his high school diploma, sixty years after leaving to enlist in the Air Force.

His first marriage was radio-broadcast.

He wed Margie Willett, his first wife, in real time during the radio show “Bride and Groom.”

At age 11, he stood 72 inches tall.

He claimed in his book “Those Funny Kids: A Treasury of Classroom Laughter” that by the time he was eleven years old, he had grown to a height of 72 inches.

On his birthday, he was misled.

For eighteen years, his parents had deceived him by pretending he was younger than he actually was in order to cover up the fact he was born outside of marriage.

He took the military to an extreme.

On his first few attempts, he was told he was too underweight to enlist in the Air Force and advised to eat a lot of food and milkshakes.
