Career

In the late 1940s, he was employed in Danville as a radio DJ. In New Orleans, on what is now known as N.B.C., WDSU-TV New Orleans Channel 6 hosted a comedy show to launch his television career. He made his network television debut in “James’ Chance of a Lifetime” (1954). He debuted on Broadway in the play “The Girls Against the Boys” in November 1959. When Van Dyke was contacted in 1961 about appearing in the sitcom “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” he gave a positive response.

He landed his first movie role in 1963, playing Albert Peterson in the “Bye Bye Birdie” movie. For the rest of the decade, he worked mostly on television pictures. He and his son Barry Van made an appearance in an episode of the television program “Airwolf” in 1987. Two years later, he appeared on “The Golden Girls” on N.B.C. He has acted in a number of popular movies, such as “Murder 101” (2003) and “Dick Tracy” (1990). It wasn’t until 2004 that he obtained his high school diploma, sixty years after leaving to enlist in the Air Force.

His first marriage was radio-broadcast.

He wed Margie Willett, his first wife, in real time during the radio show “Bride and Groom.”

At age 11, he stood 72 inches tall.

He claimed in his book “Those Funny Kids: A Treasury of Classroom Laughter” that by the time he was eleven years old, he had grown to a height of 72 inches.

On his birthday, he was misled.

For eighteen years, his parents had deceived him by pretending he was younger than he actually was in order to cover up the fact he was born outside of marriage.

He took the military to an extreme.

On his first few attempts, he was told he was too underweight to enlist in the Air Force and advised to eat a lot of food and milkshakes.
