Sara Bareilles: Career

Her surname, Bareilles, is French, and she has Italian, English, German, Portuguese, and French ancestry. She studied for a year in college in Bologna, Italy, and speaks Italian.

Growing up Catholic, Bareilles attended parochial school until transferring to public school in her junior year. She participated in musical productions at the local community theater, the high school choir, and Limited Edition. She even played Audrey in the production of “Little Shop of Horrors” at her school.

Bareilles attended the University of California, Los Angeles to study communication studies after graduating from high school in 1998.

Awaken a Cappella was a coed a cappella group that she sang original songs like “Gravity” and “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5.

The group’s version of Bareilles’ “Gravity” can be found on the compilation CD “Best of College A Cappella 2004.” Bareilles and Maroon 5 were friends during their time as undergraduates at U.C.L.A., back when the band was known as Kara’s Flowers.

In the yearly U.C.L.A. Spring Sing student concert, she took home two victories. Bareilles picked up the piano and eventually all the other instruments she has been spotted playing on her own.

Following her graduation from U.C.L.A. in 2002, Bareilles started doing stand-up at neighborhood bars and clubs (like Genghis Cohen and the Hotel Café in Los Angeles) to build a fan base before going on to bigger venues. Her two demos from 2003, “The First One in April” and “The Summer Sessions in October,” were primarily live recordings. She inked a record deal with Epic Records on April 15, 2005, and she wrote, composed, and reworked songs for her upcoming album for the remainder of 2005 and the first few months of 2006.

The lead single from her 2010 third studio album, “Kaleidoscope Heart,” “King of Anything,” was nominated for a Grammy Award. “The Blessed Unrest,” her fourth studio album, was released in 2013 and was nominated for two Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

For the 2015 Broadway musical “Waitress,” Bareilles wrote and composed the music. For this work, she was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Musical Theater Album” and a Tony Award for Best Original Score.

Later, in 2015, she published the studio album “What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress,” which features a recording of her performing a number of the musical’s songs. In 2016, she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score for her work on the Broadway production of “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

Bareilles was nominated in 2018 for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her role as Mary Magdalene in the N.B.C. musical television special “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.”

In 2018, she co-hosted the 72nd Tony Awards, for which she was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2019, she released her sixth studio album, Amidst the Chaos, and won the Grammy Award for Best American Roots Performance with the single “Saint Honesty.” She currently plays Dawn Solano in Peacock’s musical comedy “Girls5eva.”

Bareilles has sold more than one million albums and nine million singles in the United States. She has received three Primetime Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, and eight Grammy nominations; she has also won one. In February 2012, VH1 named Bareilles the 80th greatest woman in music. Her “New York Times” bestselling autobiography, “Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song,” was released in 2015.
