Steven Seagal’s Early Life

On April 10, 1952, Steven Frederic Seagal was born in Lansing, Michigan. He relocated to Fullerton, California, with his parents, Patricia and Samuel, when he was five years old. He went to Buena Park High School in Buena Park, California, and then, from 1970 to 1971, he attended Fullerton College to further his studies.

When he was younger, he started learning martial arts and took up aikido and Shito-ryu karate. An amiable Japanese coworker at a Garden Grove dojo encouraged Seagal to take his first trip to Japan when he was seventeen years old.

He first became acquainted with Miyako Fujitani in 1974. She was the Los Angeles-based student of an Osaka Aikido master. Miyako held a black belt in the second degree as well.

When she decided to go back to Osaka, Seagal relocated to Japan with her, teaching at the school owned by her family (he is frequently credited with being the first non-Asian to start a dojo in Japan).

Before returning to Japan, he initially made his way back to Taos, New Mexico, where he co-founded a dojo with his pupil Craig Dunn. He made his second trip back to the US in 1983, this time to start an aikido dojo in West Hollywood, California, with pupil Haruo Matsuoka. In 1997, they called it quits.

Steven Seagal’s Acting Career

Accompanying his partners in running the dojos they had founded together, Seagal started working on other projects, one of which was a Hollywood action movie. As a result of his significant Hollywood connections, Seagal was able to secure roles as a martial arts coordinator for the motion pictures “The Challenge” and “Never Say Never Again.”

The 1988 release of Andrew Davis’s film “Above the Law” marked his acting debut. Following its success, the movies “Hard to Kill” (1990), “Marked for Death” (1990), and “Out for Justice” (1991) were released.

Each of these was a commercial success and contributed to his reputation as an action star. His big break came with the 1992 movie “Under Siege,” which Andrew Davis also directed. The movie went on to make $156.4 million in total revenue worldwide.

In 1994, Seagal directed his first motion picture, “On Deadly Ground.” He co-starred in the movie, which was a change for him because it focused a lot on environmental and spiritual problems. Although critics gave it a bad review, Seagal views it as a pivotal point in his career.

In 1995, he resumed his cinematic career with “Under Siege 2: Dark Territory,” which was a sequel to his most famous picture, “Under Siege.” “Executive Decision” (1996), “The Glimmer Man” (1996), and “Fire Down Below” (1997) are some of the other movies he worked on in the late 1990s.

With the 1998 film “The Patriot,” which he produced on his dime and shot on and around his Montana farm, he transitioned to direct-to-video work. He has kept up his direct-to-video output, and all of his films since late 2001 have been distributed in North America as direct-to-video (DTV) releases, except “Machete” (2010). On many of these DTV movies, including “Belly of the Beast” (2003), “Out of Reach” (2004), “Black Dawn” (2005), “Submerged” (2005), “Urban Justice” (2007), “Kill Switch” (2008), “Pistol Whipped” (2008), “Against the Dark” (2009), “Driven to Kill” (2009), “A Dangerous Man” (2009), “The Keeper” (2009), and “Born to Raise Hell” (2010), he is also frequently credited as producer and occasionally screenwriter.
