Every fourth Wednesday in March is American Red Cross Giving Day, and this year it falls on March 22. The American Red Cross Giving Day is an opportunity for individuals to support and assist the organization’s urgent humanitarian requirements. The American Red Cross was founded to aid anyone in need, without distinction. The organization was founded to provide aid and support to the wounded on the battlefield and to prevent and alleviate suffering wherever it occurs on a national and international scale.
The background of American Red Cross Giving Day
Initiated in June 2015, the American Red Cross Giving Day aims to unite individuals in support of those in need. It is a day to garner as much public support for humanitarian aid as feasible. They accept both donations and volunteers and teach individuals how to save lives. They teach individuals how to administer first aid to victims in a variety of situations so that they are prepared to save lives if necessary.
In 1863, Henry Dunant established the international Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. Dunant was distressed by the loss of life at the Battle of Solferino in 1859. He proposed the formation of national relief societies comprised of volunteers trained during times of peace to provide neutral and impartial aid to those in need, bringing relief during times of conflict. In 1863, a committee was established in Geneva, and the Red Cross’s charter was drafted. Later, he proposed that nations adopt an international agreement recognizing the status of medical services and battlefield casualties. This was the first Geneva Convention, which was ratified in 1864.
Eventually, the British Red Cross was founded. During the Franco-Prussian War in August 1870, a resolution was enacted to establish the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded. It was renamed the British Red Cross in 1905.
