Answer the Phone Like Buddy the Elf Day: A Brief History
We are not kidding when we say that Elf is the best Christmas movie of our time. A lot of Fandango users even agreed with that in 2017. Do you know, though, that Elf might not have been the movie we know it to be? It wasn’t even Will Ferrell who was first chosen to play Buddy! Gasp!
The story for Elf was first written by David Berenbaum in 1993 with Jim Carrey in mind to play Buddy. His later writing team, which included Adam McKay and (gasp!) Will Ferrell, worked on the script for years and made many changes and rewrites. The story was very dark at this point, and Jon Favreau wasn’t interested in it at first, even though he wanted to be a part of Will Ferrell’s first movie project after leaving Saturday Night Live. Favreau didn’t turn down the chance; instead, he rewrote the story and made Buddy’s world look like one of the Rankin Bass Christmas specials.
By turning the movie from a raunchy dark comedy into a real Christmas movie, they were able to rate it PG instead of PG-13, which was what the plot called for. It was a big risk for Will Ferrell to play Buddy in what he called a part that could make or break his career. Terry Zwigoff was asked to direct the movie, but he turned it down because he had already agreed to direct the Christmas comedy Bad Santa. Jon Favreau finally chose to direct it himself after looking for other directors. As a result of Favreau’s willingness to let Ferrell make Buddy his own (many of our favorite classic lines, like “You sit on a throne of lies”), Buddy turned into the funny, charming, and charismatic character we all fell in love with in 2003!

Pay attention to him! You can’t listen to him for more than five seconds without getting a smile. Something about Buddy makes you laugh, but not at him. You want to laugh with him!
He is honest.
Do you remember when Buddy went to the mall to meet Santa? He quickly caught the fake by telling him that he smells “like beef and cheese” and that the throne he’s sitting on is made of lies. Buddy, on the other hand, is very nice, and there is no evil in what he says. He’s being honest!
The real deal.
Do you remember the cool scene where Buddy played with the jack-in-the-boxes? The release mechanism was controlled off-stage, and Ferrell had to wait a while before it went off. All of Will Ferrell’s responses were real.
