Founding of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan 2023: Date, History, Facts about Azerbaijan

The Founding of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, formerly known as Republic Day and commonly known as Independence Day, is a national holiday in Azerbaijan celebrated on May 28. This day commemorates the establishment of the first Turkic and Islamic nation to grant women the right to vote and establish gender equality in political rights. In May of 1918, Azerbaijan declared independence from the Russian Empire for the first time.

The background of Founding of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan was a territory ruled by the Russian Empire, which was overthrown in 1917 by the Russian Revolution. Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh, a scholar and public figure, founded the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan and declared its independence for the first time in May 1918. In November, at the close of the year, the republic even had its own flag. During the subsequent few years, Azerbaijani women were granted the right to vote, and the nation became the first Islamic and Turkic territory to grant women and men equal political rights.

Once the Soviet Union ascended to power in eastern Europe, however, Azerbaijan was again invaded and the government was seized. Only after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 was Azerbaijan able to regain its independence; in August, it became the new Republic of Azerbaijan. Although there are numerous self-proclaimed independent regions within and encircling the country, the international community still considers them to be a part of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan is a geographical region comprised of diverse ethnic groups. Azerbaijanis were formerly known as Caucasian Turks, Transcaucasian Muslims, and Tatars. The country’s population is approximately 10 million. It was also admitted to the United Nations Security Council in 1992 and enacted a constitution in 1995.
