Foursquare Day is celebrated on April 16 as the birthday of the ubiquitous geolocation application, Foursquare. This is possibly one of the most unusual vacations you’ve ever encountered. The concept behind the creation of this holiday is also unique. Four square is 16, which is equivalent to 4/16 or April 16. And thus this day came into existence. Today, this day is celebrated with great fervour in over 100 cities around the globe. We are thrilled to celebrate the release of this app, which makes it simpler for us to share our location and detect our friends’ locations.
The background of Foursquare Day
Foursquare Day, commonly referred to as “4sqDay,” originated in Tampa, Florida. Nathan Bonilla-Warford came up with the appellation for today. Warford is an optometrist by trade and a lover of dates and numerals. He proposed a holiday for April 16 (44 = 16) on the online community portal “Get Satisfaction.” Later, he elaborated on the topic in one of his diaries. But stop! He continued on from there. On March 22, 2009, he discussed Foursquare Day with the project manager in charge, Jessica Barnett, who assisted him in promoting his concept. On March 26, Foursquare made an official announcement on Twitter regarding the observance of this day.
In honour of this holiday, a group of Foursquare users from Tampa collaborated with Warford to organise an event to raise awareness and popularise the occasion. On the first holiday, the app saw 550,000 check-ins and 20,000 new user registrations. Today, this holiday is celebrated in various locations and in various methods. In addition to routine check-ins, interested individuals also host gatherings and lectures.
Using a map with icons, the Foursquare Day team kept track of all celebrations for some time. However, as the holiday’s prominence skyrocketed, the team was unable to keep up and removed the icons. For various events, Foursquare offers swag bundles containing items such as stickers, buttons, and t-shirts, among others, to encourage attendees and promote their business. There is no team involvement in the organisation of these events. They give members of the community the freedom to organise events and gatherings according to their preferences and convenience.
