Grandma’s Day is observed yearly on January 21 in Poland. The day is widely commemorated in Poland, with children and adults presenting their grandmothers with handmade cards, flowers, and modest presents. On this day, schools and kindergartens may conduct minor festivities and celebrations. In Poland, grandparents are a vital part of family life and spend countless hours with their grandkids. According to studies, Polish grandparents spend more time with their grandkids than their European counterparts. They work approximately nine hours per week on average. Instead of hiring a nanny or other childcare worker, grandparents will assume the role of caretaker for their families.
HISTORY OF GRANDMA’S DAY
Unlike many holidays in other countries, Grandma’s and Grandpa’s day are two separate January holidays that occur consecutively. Grandma’s Day is on January 21, while Grandpa’s Day is on January 22. Many other nations, like the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, and South Africa, celebrate both grandparents on the same day.
1964 was the year that “Kobieta I ycie” magazine founded Grandma’s Day. The following year, the “Express Poznaski” newspaper began to promote the new holiday, and its popularity increased. The “Express Wieczorny” newspaper then joined the celebrations, and Grandma’s Day became a popular Polish holiday.
Polish grandmas and grandpas are referred to as babcia and dziadek, respectively, and are famed for spoiling their grandkids with sweets and delectable meals. It is observed that this may be the outcome of having grown up during the war or the age of strict communism.
There are no traditions or customs linked with this day, other than spending the day with your grandma. On average, Polish grandparents have three grandkids, providing plenty opportunities for hugs, gifts, and greeting cards! Of course, adult grandchildren also commemorate this day and lavish the family matriarchs with gifts, flowers, and greeting cards.
