International Clouded Leopard Day is observed annually on August 4. In an effort to increase the number of Clouded Leopards in captivity and in the wild, it is commemorated to bring attention to one of the most beautiful and endangered animal species: the Clouded Leopard. This animal is also known as the mainland clouded leopard, among other names. These species of feral cats inhabit the dense forests of the Himalayan foothills, mainland Southeast Asia, and southern China. There are fewer than 10,000 Clouded leopards in the wild, according to estimates. These nocturnal and timid animals are endangered because they are illegally hunted for their fur and their habitat is continuously under threat.
The background of International Clouded Leopard Day
A million years ago, the clouded leopard genetically diverged from pantherine animals. Local extinctions have occurred in Singapore, Taiwan, and presumably Hainan Island and Vietnam. It is believed that its total population consists of fewer than 10,000 mature individuals, with no singular population exceeding 1,000 adults. This resulted in its 2008 inclusion on the IUCN Red List as a species in danger.
The population of clouded leopards has continued to be threatened by deforestation on a large scale and illegal wildlife trade trafficking. Their body parts are used for decoration and apparel, despite the fact that in many countries they are legally protected. In the 1980s, as their existence continued to be threatened, captive reproduction programmes were initiated. The average lifespan of a clouded leopard in captivity is 11 years, which is a respectable number compared to its lifespan in the wild.
Howlett’s Wild Animal Park established International Clouded Leopard Day (I.C.L.D.) in 2018 to raise awareness of the clouded leopard. Lauren Amos and Dan Kemp led the day’s proceedings. Through partnerships with institutions, charities, businesses, and individuals, millions of people have learned about these animals and the threats they face.
As long as they remain in people’s minds, there is a greater likelihood of conserving them and their habitat. As Lauren Amos and Dan Kemp worked with clouded leopards at Howletts Wild Animal Park, they fell in love with the animals and devised a plan to celebrate all clouded leopards on August 4 each year, which has since been adopted by the international community.
