October 15 is International Day of Rural Women. In honor of the millions of women who reside in remote, rural areas, this day recognizes their contributions and accomplishments in the fields of agriculture and rural development.
The background of International Day of Rural Women
Ever since its inception in 1945, the United Nations (U.N.) has endeavored to promote and sustain international peace and friendship. The United Nations has implemented a number of humanitarian initiatives and ratified resolutions and acts concerning environmental protection. A significant accomplishment of the United Nations is the extent to which it has contributed to the advancement and welfare of women, particularly those residing in rural areas.
At the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing, China in 1995, the concept of empowering and recognizing women was introduced. In recognition of the significant contributions rural women make to agriculture, food production, and food safety, it was proposed that October 15 be designated as International Day of Rural Women, coinciding with the observance of World Food Day on October 16.
A resolution was adopted at the 2003 World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva, which endorsed the commitment to enhance information and communication technology capabilities for all individuals, indigenous communities, women, and those residing in remote and rural areas. A discussion on this resolution was also held in Tunis, Tunisia, during the 2005 Tunis Agenda For The Information Society.
In resolution 62/136 passed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 2007, it was officially declared that October 15th would be observed annually on a global scale as International Day of Rural Women. Subsequent to that, numerous nations worldwide have observed International Day of Rural Women, an occasion that honors the resilience and accomplishments of these women in promoting the general welfare of the community and the sustainability of rural households, notwithstanding the obstacles and preconceived notions they faced.
