Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and China. It covers an area of 236,000 square kilometers (91,400 square miles) and has a population of about 6.8 million people. The capital city is Vientiane.

Laos is one of the world’s poorest countries. More than 60% of the population lives below the poverty line of US$1.25 per day. The mainstay of the economy is agriculture, with rice being the main crop. Tourism is also an important source of income for Laos.

Lao Culture

Lao National Day is celebrated on December 2nd. It commemorates the day in 1975 when the Lao people’s revolutionary party took control of the government and proclaimed the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

The Lao culture has its origins in the ancient kingdom of Lan Xang, which was founded in the 14th century. The kingdom was a melting pot of cultures, with influences from Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Burma. After centuries of decline, Lan Xang was eventually absorbed into the French colonial empire in the late 19th century.

When Laos gained independence from France in 1953, it adopted a constitutional monarchy system of government. But this system proved to be unstable, and in 1975, a communist party seized power and established the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

Since then, Laos has been ruled by a single-party socialist state. Although there have been some reforms in recent years, Laos remains one of the most isolated and repressive countries in the world.

Lao History

Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar (formerly Burma), China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. It covers an area of 236,000 square kilometers (91,400 square miles), making it about the size of the United Kingdom. Laos has a population of 6.8 million people. The capital city of Laos is Vientiane.

The official languages of Laos are Lao and French. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Laos. Theravada Buddhism is practiced by about two-thirds of the population, while Mahayana Buddhism is practiced by most of the remainder. Animism and Christianity are also practiced in Laos.

The history of Laos can be traced back to the kingdom of Lan Xang Hom Khao (“Million Elephants Under the White Parasol”), which was founded in 1354 by Fa Ngum. Lan Xang became one of the largest empires in Southeast Asia, covering present-day Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam. However, over time Lan Xang began to decline due to internal strife and wars with its neighbors. In 1707, Lan Xang split into three separate kingdoms: Luang Prabang in the north, Vientiane in the center, and Champasak in the south.

Lao People

Lao people are the ethnic group that inhabits the country of Laos. They are also called Laotians. The Lao people share a common culture, history, and language. There are an estimated 6 million Lao people in the world. The vast majority of them live in Laos, where they make up about 60% of the population.

The Lao people have a long history in Southeast Asia. They are thought to be the descendants of the ancient Tai people who migrated from southern China to present-day Laos centuries ago. Over time, the Lao people developed their own unique culture and traditions.

The Lao language is a member of the Tai-Kadai language family. It is closely related to Thai and Isan, two other major languages spoken in Southeast Asia. Most Lao people can also speak English or French due to the country’s former status as a French colony.

The Lao people are mainly Buddhist. Theravada Buddhism is the dominant form of Buddhism practiced in Laos. However, there is also a significant minority of Christians, mostly Catholic, as well as smaller numbers of Muslims and animists.

The traditional dress of the Lao people is very similar to that worn by Thai people. Men typically wear a sarong-like garment called a pha khao ma while women wear a sinh, which is a long skirt wrapped around the body. Both men and women often wear colorful silk scarves called phasin
