National Activity Professionals Day 2024: This year’s National Activity Professionals Day falls on January 26, the fourth Friday in January. It’s a unique day to commemorate and acknowledge all the activity specialists who look after and give the elderly citizens of our nation’s nursing homes engaging experiences. You may be surprised to learn that, as Americans live longer now, there is a greater need for patient-centered eldercare. Professionals in activities can help with this. The lives of people in nursing homes are much improved and made more interesting by them. They inspire, engage, enhance, and improve! Many long-term residents report having positive quality-of-life experiences as a result of them.

The Background of National Activity Professionals Day

On this day, we honor the ingenuity, zeal, and commitment of all activity coordinators and social workers to enable seniors in assisted living facilities across the nation to lead the most fulfilling lives imaginable. Through organizing games and social gatherings and supporting care teams, professionals improve the lives of residents and their families daily.

The National Association of Activity Professionals (NAAP), the sole organization that represents activity professionals only in geriatric settings, established National Activity Professionals Day. Activity associations around the country were polled in 1980 to see if they required a national association. The survey led to the formation of NAAP, a small but committed group of activity professionals. In a few years, Sister Pat Murphy was chosen to serve as NAAP’s first president as the organization saw significant growth. In recognition of the vital role that activity professionals play in enhancing the lives of those under their care, NAAP established National Activity Professionals Day. 1984 saw the celebration of the first National Activity Professionals Day.

<p>NAAP later extended the festivities to include a full week of festivities. National Activity Professionals Week, which runs from today through Sunday, is a seven-day celebration of the incredible work that activity professionals produce.
