We’ll also look at some of the challenges that come along with celebrating this special day and discuss ways we can keep it alive year after year.

What is National Bible Sunday?

National Bible Sunday is a day set aside to encourage Americans to read and study the Bible. It is celebrated on the first Sunday in January each year.

The day was first observed in 1815, when President James Madison proclaimed it a day of national thanksgiving for the blessings of liberty and peace. In his proclamation, Madison said that “it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared another National Bible Day, this time as a day of fasting and prayer during the Civil War. Lincoln called on Americans to pray that God would “grant unto both North and South this terrible war may speedily close; that all remaining differences between them may be forever settled and extinguished; and that as soon as possible peace may be restored with all its blessed fruits and consolations.”

Since then, several other presidents have issued proclamations recognizing National Bible Week or National Bible Day. In 1948, President Harry Truman signed a bill declaring the second Sunday in November each year as National Bible Week. The president was authorized to issue an annual proclamation calling on Americans to observe the week with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

In 1953, President Dwight Eisenhower proclaimed April 17 as National Bible Day. And in 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill designating the first Sunday in May as National

The History of National Bible Sunday

The Bible is the oldest and most read book in history. Though its origins are unknown, it is thought to have been written over a span of 1500 years by more than 40 different authors. The Bible first became popular in the United States in the early 1800s when revivals led by circuit-riding preachers swept across the country. These revival meetings often included public readings of Scripture, which helped to raise interest in the Bible among Americans.

In 1816, the American Bible Society was founded with the mission of making the Bible available to as many people as possible. The ABS distributed Bibles throughout the country and also sent missionaries overseas to spread the gospel. National Bible Week was established in 1941 as a way to encourage Americans to read and study the Bible. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared the first National Bible Sunday, which is now observed on the third Sunday in January each year.
