The History of Bobbleheads
Bobbleheads, also known as nodder dolls, have been around for centuries. The first recorded bobblehead was of the Chinese god Budai, also known as the Laughing Buddha. These figures were made out of clay and were designed to wobble their heads when tapped.
The modern bobblehead doll was invented in the early twentieth century and became popular in the 1960s. Bobbleheads are usually made out of ceramic or plastic and are based on famous people, characters, or animals. They are often given away as promotional items or purchased as collector’s items.
National Bobblehead Day was created in 2014 by Phil Sklar and Brad Novak, the co-founders of the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum. The day is celebrated on January 7th to coincide with the birthday of American president Abraham Lincoln, who is considered to be the first bobblehead doll.
