The 26th of August has no religious or historical significance in Papua New Guinea; it is merely an informal day of prayer to “ask the Lord for forgiveness for the wrongs happening in Papua New Guinea.”

This conflict culminated in the July 2012 elections, in which O’Neill was elected prime minister and proceeded to serve the Papua New Guinean people until 2019.

A group of congregations initially proposed the day to O’Neill’s predecessor Sam Abal. Though O’Neill never specified the purpose of the holiday, Pastor Jack Edward of the Shema Evangelism Ministry, coordinator of Repentance Day, stated that the holiday was intended to be a day of repentance and imploring the Lord to forgive the country’s ills.
