Every year on August 26, people gather to commemorate National Cherry Popsicle Day. On a hot summer day, there are few things better than a sweet, juicy popsicle to help you chill off. The cherry popsicle appears to be a joyful symbol of summer enjoyment. On National Cherry Popsicle Day, indulge your inner child and savour a cherry popsicle or two! A ‘popsicle’ is any frozen fruit liquid served on a stick. Today, many brands around the world offer these frozen treats in an assortment of flavours, and they can also be made at home.
The background of National Cherry Popsicle Day
However, the origin of the popsicle is well-known. A child of eleven years old is credited with inventing this delectable treat! During the frigid winter, Francis William Epperson was preparing a soda drink on his porch. He prepared soda pop by combining soda granules and water. As any 11-year-old would presumably do, he left the drink on the porch and went inside. The mixture froze overnight, and the next day he discovered the frozen beverage with the stirring stick still inside; thus, the popsicle was created.
This delectable delicacy remained a private creation until 18 years later, when the rest of the world was introduced to it. The child introduced the frozen pop on a stick to the Neptune Beach amusement park in Belmar, New Jersey, on his own initiative. It was so successful that he applied for a patent immediately. The name “popsicle” was chosen at the behest of his children. Prior to that, the popsicle was sold under the name “Epsicle Ice Pop.” The rest, as they say, is history, as popsicles are now synonymous with summer and fond childhood memories.
Even though Popsicle is protected by copyright, nearly everyone uses it to characterise any frozen treat. In fact, popsicles are frequently referenced in song lyrics, movie and book dialogues without our knowledge of copyright violations. It’s fascinating how this humble delicacy continues to provide surprises.
