National Dorothy Day 2023: Celebrate National Dorothy Day every year on December 3. This is the official day to thank all the Dorothys in the world. No matter what age, that name is sure to bring back childhood memories, especially for people who have read or seen “The Wizard of Oz.” And today might be the day that things change for those who don’t get what was being said before. Dorothea is the Greek name that gave birth to Dorothy. Dorothy means “gift of God” in English. Legend has it that there was a saint named Dorothea whose name became famous because of how romanticized her death was.
How National Dorothy Day came to be
It is thought that the name Dorothy was first used in 1880, when 112 babies were born with it. A lot of people liked it the most in the 1920s. With 39,999 girls being christened with the name Dorothy, 1924 was the year with the most kids given that name. Most of them were born in the state of Pennsylvania. In 1914, Dorothy was the third most popular name for a girl just in the state of Illinois.
In terms of history, the “Martyrologium Hieronymianum” is the first place where the name Dorothea was written down. This text was a little black book with the names of Christian saints written in order of when they died. It was the most important book in the Middle Ages and the oldest “martyrology” with names of martyrs from all over the world that has been found. But we’re not just going to tell you that Dorothea was a victim and a saint as a result. The most interesting part is always the story behind it.
The story goes that Dorothea was a pretty young Christian woman who lived in Caesarea, which is now in Turkey, between 290 and 311 AD. She fell in love with a lawyer named Theophilus, but she turned him down because he was a pagan. Because she was turned down, Theophilus told the Roman ruler that she was breaking the law by refusing to take part in an idol sacrifice. Christians were being persecuted a lot at this time, so Dorothea was quickly put to death for her sin. Theophilus made fun of her on the way by asking her to send petals and apples from the garden in paradise. When she died, an angel did that, which made Theophilus become a Christian.
Some places around the world celebrate St. Dorothy’s feast day on February 6; she is thought to be the patron saint of gardens. As early as the 1300s, artists loved drawing and painting her, and many statues and paintings show her. Dorothy May Crowfoot Hodgkin was another famous Dorothy. She was a British scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1964 for making it easier to use X-ray crystallography to learn more about biomolecular structures. Many other important people with the name Dorothea were women who fought in World War I as men, a radical Catholic social activist and anarchist, an African-American woman elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives, and a British hymn writer famous for her children’s hymns.
