National Freedom to Marry Day 2024: On February 12, National Freedom to Marry Day, people celebrate the freedom to marry someone of the same sex. This unofficial holiday has been honoring the LGBTQ community’s equal rights to marriage and fighting for love since 1999. The fight to normalize same-sex marriage has made significant progress, but it is far from resolved. An unconditional marital union between all LGBTQ couples should be totally acceptable, although more and more nations are now permitting a modified form of marriage between couples of the same sex.
National Freedom to Marry Day History
To encourage same-sex marriage, February 12 has been the annual National Freedom to Marry Day celebration since 1999. Lambda Legal, a Washington, D.C.-based homosexual rights advocacy law firm, took the lead in establishing this holiday.
However, the struggle to legalize same-sex marriages has been going on for decades prior to the creation of this holiday. For more than 20 years, Evan Wolfson, the creator of the organization Freedom to Marry, has been advancing the legal argument in favor of same-sex unions. He penned a 1983 article while attending Harvard Law School, which is today regarded as the foundational work for the Freedom to Marry movement.
The most successful National Freedom to Marry Day occurred in 2004, when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom ordered the City and County of San Francisco to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The clerk’s office was instructed to begin making the required modifications to the “forms and documents used to apply for and issue marriage licenses [… in order to provide them on a nondiscriminatory basis” on February 10.
In honor of their love, many LGBTQ people tie the knot on National Freedom to Marry Day, which falls two days before Valentine’s Day. To symbolize “tying the knot,” knots are tied around trees, signs, and pretty much anywhere else.
