National Rachel Day 2024: Every year on January 4th, we commemorate National Rachel Day. The Hebrew etymology of Rachel’s given name refers to a female sheep, or “ewe,” or “the one with purity.” Ashkenazi Variants of the name are the source of the Jewish matronymic surnames “Rokhlin,” “Raskin,” “Raskine,” “Rashkin,” and “Rashkind.” It’s also conceivable that the surname Ruskin is an Americanized version of Raskin. The English names Rachael, Rachelle, and Rochelle are more noteworthy variations. Other linguistic variations of this name include Rachela in Polish, Ráhel in Hungarian, and Raquel in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, and Galician.

The National Rachel Day History

According to sixteenth-century English baptismal records, Christians in England first used the name Rachel in the mid-1500s. Rachel, along with other names from the Christian Bible, gained popularity during the Protestant Reformation. Before that, Jews in the Middle Ages were commonly known by this moniker. According to the Bible, Rachel was Joseph Benjamin’s mother and Jacob’s wife. Her name means “ewe” since Jacob met her while she was caring for sheep. Afterward, Joseph and Benjamin combined to become two of Israel’s twelve tribes.

At its height of popularity in 1996, Rachel rose to the ninth position in the U.S. popularity rankings after being widely popular throughout the 1970s. Regretfully, the name has declined since then; in 2020, it was placed 227th.

Rachel Louise Carson, who lived from May 27, 1907, to April 14, 1964, was a significant historical figure. She was an American writer, conservationist, and marine biologist who, via her book “Silent Spring” (1962) and other writings, advanced the global environmental movement. According to Carson’s book, once pesticides like DDT entered the biosphere, they not only killed bugs but also harmed fish and bird populations, moved up the food chain, and finally made children sick. It sparked a grassroots environmental movement that culminated in the establishment of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and led to a statewide ban on DDT and other pesticides. Through her labor, she also cleared the path for several female scientists.
