National Unity Day 2023 (Germany): On October 3, Germans commemorate the unification of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic into a singular federal Germany on the same date in 1990. A public holiday, the day features concerts, communal meals, political speeches, and pyrotechnics.
The background of National Unity Day
After World War II, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union each commanded a military sector of Germany. On October 7 of the same year, the German Democratic Republic (also known as the DDR — ‘Deutsche Demokratische Republik’) was established.
Political tensions in postwar Europe limited the interaction between the two countries’ populations. The DDR resisted vigorously against the repression of its political adversaries. The German authorities monitored tens of thousands of individuals.
On September 4, 1989, the citizens of Leipzig staged a peaceful protest against the DDR government. Other cities in the DDR also witnessed demonstrations demanding political reforms and the opening of borders. And on November 9 that year, the checkpoints between the two German countries were opened and people could travel freely once more. This date signifies the ‘destruction’ of the Berlin Wall.
In the DDR, democratic elections paved the path for greater social cohesion. The leaders of both countries signed the Treaty of Unification in August 1990, and Germany’s unification became official on October 3, 1990.
The Berlin Wall and the Brandenburg Gate are two significant symbols of Germany’s division and 1990 reunification. On German Unity Day, images of both of these are displayed across Germany. The holiday is commemorated with a three-day festival at the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag in the vicinity of Platz der Republik.
