National VTuber Day is celebrated annually on May 25 to honour VTubers around the globe. A virtual YouTuber, also known as a VTuber, is an online performer who uses an avatar generated by a computer. Commonly, but not always, real-time motion capture technology or software is used to capture movement. The majority of VTubers are Japanese and English-speaking live broadcasters or YouTubers who use avatar designs, a digital trend that originated in Japan in the middle of the 2010s and has since become a worldwide internet phenomenon.
The background of National VTuber Day
On February 12, 2010, Nitroplus began uploading videos to its YouTube channel, showcasing an illustrated 3D version of its mascot Super Sonico, who would primarily inform the audience about herself or impending Nitroplus titles. In 2012, the Japanese company Weathernews Inc. introduced Weatheroid Type A Airi, a Vocaloid-inspired character, on SOLiVE24, a 24-hour weather live broadcast on Nico Nico Douga, YouTube, and their website. 2014 saw the debut of Airi’s weekly Thursday solo programme, followed by the introduction of live motion capture coverage.
The first popular VTuber, Kizuna AI, debuted on YouTube in late 2016. Kizuna AI, created by digital production company Activ8 and voiced by Nozomi Kasuga, provided its followers with a sense of “genuine intimacy” by responding to their queries. Rapidly gaining popularity, Kizuna Al sparked a VTuber trend. Due to the popularity of anime and manga, the trend began to proliferate abroad after its initial success in Japan.
Similar to professional wrestling, VTubers frequently dress up as kayfabe characters. Mace, a WWE wrestler who began broadcasting on Twitch in 2021 as a VTuber, stated that the two occupations were “essentially the same thing.” VTubers are associated with Japanese aesthetics and popular culture, such as anime and manga, in addition to kawaii anthropomorphism with human or non-human characteristics.
