The first National Welsh Corgi Day was observed by the Omaha Corgi Crew. The Omaha Corgi Crew was founded in December 2011 by a group of friends who shared a passion for vertically challenged, big-hearted herding dogs. The Omaha Corgi Crew, as the name suggests, is based in Omaha, Nebraska and the surrounding area.

The history of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi appears to be untraceable. Corgis are mentioned in legends and folklore, and even have ties to the British Isles’ small people. According to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, the ancestry of Pembroke’s corgis dates back at least to the 10th century. However, it is unknown whether they are descended from the Swedish Vallhunds that the Vikings may have brought with them or from the Schipperkes and Pomeranians that Flemish weavers brought to Wales.

This dog breed was known as “heelers” due to their small stature and high agility. They were utilised to move large groups of larger animals more quickly. These canines are also known as dwarf dogs and cur dogs. The latter name is derived from the Norse word kurra, which means “to growl.” There are also some intriguing tales concerning corgis. Two children stumbled upon a fairy funeral in the woods and brought corgis to humans, according to an ancient tale. The fairies gave the children two corgi puppies. It is said that the rougher fur at the base of a corgi’s haunches is the saddle line from when fairies used them as war horses.
