Refired Not Retired Day is on March 1 for those who have recently retired. This day was created with the sole intention of rewriting the story of a mundane retirement plan. After an unplanned early retirement at age 55 and a subsequent divorce, Phyllis May created this day. Since moving to Key West, Florida, she has been living la vida loca. Retirement is an exciting period of life in which you can put the stresses of the working world behind you and focus on the things you’ve never had the time to do.
The background of Refired Not Retired Day
Retirement is viewed as a time in a person’s life when he or she is free from the struggles of earning a living and can enjoy a peaceful, reflective existence with family and friends. Refired Not Retired Day was created to counteract this perception. Retirement is a time of freedom, a time to explore your interests and discover new ones. Phyllis May understood the importance of living life to the fullest.
Phyllis taught for 34 years before retiring at the age of 55. Prior to that, she had no concrete retirement plans, her husband had divorced her, and her daughter had already left for college. In addition to this turmoil, she had to have her sick dog euthanized. She was alone in a community where she had spent 25 years of her life and, like most retirees, is pondering “what now?”
She finally realised that nothing was preventing her from moving forward. On March 1, 1998, she moved to Key West, Florida, without knowing a single person there. She was also unaware that she would set a precedent that would be associated with that date.
After her relocation, Phyllis investigated various menial positions. She worked as a concierge, at a bed and breakfast, and even at a gift shop in the Caribbean named The Pelican Poop Shop! She eventually discovered her calling by hosting a television show for a year and publishing “Keys to Paradise…a fun guide to Key West” as her first book.
After that, she travelled throughout the eastern United States and Puerto Rico for two years to conduct seminars for a company and her own seminars. Refired Not Retired Day was created in honour of her adventurous post-retirement years and to encourage other retirees to seize the opportunity to live life to the fullest.
