After Memorial Day weekend, the Scripps National Spelling Bee takes place from Tuesday to Thursday. This year, it occurs between May 31 and June 2. It is a nationwide competition conducted annually throughout the United States. Students have the opportunity to compete for grand rewards and receive national recognition. The purpose of the spelling bee is to enhance students’ spelling abilities, expand their vocabularies, and promote correct English usage.
The background of Scripps National Spelling Bee
The National Spelling Bee was established in 1925 to encourage literacy throughout the nation. The initial spelling contest was sponsored by nine newspapers. After 90 years, literacy initiatives now reach an estimated 11 million students annually. Frank Neuhauser won the first National Spelling Bee; his correct spelling of “gladiolus” earned him the title.
The annual spelling contest has been held every year except from 1943 to 1945 during World War II and in 2020 due to the global pandemic. The E.W. Scripps Company acquired the rights to the national television programme in 1941. The corporation hosts the bee at a convention centre or hotel in Washington, D.C. on a non-profit basis. The dates of the annual spelling contest vary, but it is always held in the week following Memorial Day Weekend.
The spelling competition is open to all 15-year-old pupils who have not completed eighth grade. Students who have previously won the National Spelling Bee are also disqualified. The purpose of the event is to develop children’s vocabulary, encourage proper usage, and promote the English language.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s longest-running educational programme, sponsored by 291 partners in the United States, Canada, Guam, Jamaica, Ghana, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.
