History
When Kulasekara built Madurai in the sixth century B.C., the history of the Pandyan kingdom began. The Pandyas were known for being very smart and good at business. They ruled over a part of South Kerala that is now Madurai and Tirunelveli districts. They did business with Greece and Rome and were good people in their own right.
The early Cholas ruled for the first several hundred years of AD. Karikalan was the first and most famous king. The Pallavas became powerful near the end of the fourth century AD and ruled the south for another 400 years. In the sixth century, they got rid of the Cholas and ruled Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). During this time, Dravidian design reached its highest point. Aditya Chola got rid of Aparajitha, who was the last Pallava king, near the end of the 9th century AD.
By the ninth century AD, the Cholas were back in charge. Rajaraja Chola and his son, Rajendra Chola, made them the most powerful family in South India. They got rid of the eastern Chalukya state and took over parts of Ceylon by getting rid of the Pandyas. Rajendra Chola built a new capital city called “Gangaikonda Cholapuram” to remember how he beat Mahipala, who was king of Bihar and Bengal.
Because the Cholas were losing power in the 1400s, the Pandyas briefly took it back. The Muslim attack made both the Cholas and the Pandyas less powerful, which led to the creation of the Bahmani Kingdom. Hindus worked together to stop the Muslim invasion and build the most powerful kingdom in the south, the Vijayanagara Empire.
In 1639, the British East India Company set up the Madras Presidency, which marked the start of a new era in Tamil Nadu’s history. Over time, the British ruled most of South India and Tamil Nadu. After India got its freedom in 1947, Madras State became Madras State.
In 1953, Madras State was split into two states: Madras State, which is made up of the Tamil-speaking areas in the south, and Andhra Pradesh, which is made up of the Telugu-speaking areas in the north. The 1956 States Reorganization Act took away the western coasts of Madras State and gave them to Kerala and Mysore. In 1968, Madras State changed its name to Tamil Nadu. The name of the main city changed from Madras to Chennai in 1996.
