The fourth of April is Tell a Lie Day, which grants us permission to lie within reason. It follows April Fool’s Day by only a few days, making it the ideal companion holiday for those still in the mischievous spirit. There are instances when it is acceptable to lie. One of these strategies entails bluffing during a poker game. It is preferable to maintain a straight face and appear as if our hands are not as strong as they actually are. After all, sometimes it pays to be an excellent liar!
The background of Tell a Lie Day
Tricksters have existed since the beginning of recorded mythology. They have appeared in folktales across the globe as gods, goddesses, spirits, and animals with human characteristics who have a tendency to cause mischief.
Certain Native American communities have utilised these tales to teach their youth valuable life lessons. These tricksters, frequently portrayed as coyotes, take great pleasure in defrauding, lying, tricking, and deceiving for their own personal gain or enjoyment.
Published in 1876, “Aesop’s Fables” is a compilation of fables written by an Ancient Greek slave and storyteller. In “The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf,” a youth tells villagers that a wolf devoured his flock of sheep. In reality, the youngster was lying to generate excitement. When a wolf actually appeared, he informed the villagers, but they were on to his trick and did not believe him. A wise man informs the shepherd boy that even if he tells the truth, he will not be believed because he is a liar.
In 1940, the novel “The Adventures of Pinnochio” by Italian author Carlo Collodi was adapted into an animated film. In “Pinnochio,” an elderly, destitute woodcarver longed for his marionette to come to life because he was so lonely. Pinnochio is brought to life when the Blue Fairy grants his wish, but he is still composed of wood. Pinnochio must make a succession of decisions that test his goodness, and if he tells a lie, his nose will grow.
Clown is a Jungian archetype that lacks supernatural or divine powers. Instead, they are charismatically humorous and have been given stock character roles to lend humour to the story. On the other extreme of the spectrum is the DC Comics villain Joker, whose clown and deceitful antics have reached a dangerous level. Tell a Lie Day gives people the opportunity to pretend for a short time, despite the fact that lying is rarely viewed as a desirable attribute in modern society.
