Eunice was an old student of Ralph C. Morrison, a community college instructor in the area. Something about the name stuck with Morrison when he read an article about her later and learned that Eunice had attended Toad Hollow Country School, which was located on Knox Street in Kalamazoo and had closed in 1834. He finally used the phrase “Toad Hollow” in his made-up stories as a result of it. Toad Hollow became a magical village because of him. Morrison was granted permission by Kalamazoo County to narrate his stories in a nearby park as a result of the stories’ popularity. The volunteers that were chosen were referred to as “voluntoads,” and they constructed a replica of the town that they named Toad Hollow. They held events including Renaissance Fairs and Civil War reenactments, as well as lessons on blacksmithing, sewing, and the manufacture of candles and soap. Sadly, this was only effective for three years before the county took back ownership of the land.

Following this, the volunteers spread out and began working as teachers at neighboring schools until 2003. They took writing workshops, shared trade expertise, practiced storytelling, and had discussions about the arts. During this period, the volunteer toads also devised the Toad Hollow Day of Encouragement, a day dedicated to spreading compassion, knowledge, and support among themselves.
