Torture Abolition Day 2024: In the United States, February 4 is designated as Torture Abolition Day each year. It is a celebration honoring the cessation of torture’s application in society. It is just forbidden to torture individuals or animals for one’s own benefit or enjoyment. People battled for years to put an end to the inhumane actions that were committed against them. Every living creature, including humans, needs to be treated with decency and respect. To ensure that the prohibited act of torture is not carried out, Torture Abolition Day serves as a reminder.

Torture Abolition Day History

The United States observes Torture Abolition Day on February 4 of each year. Torture is defined as the application of suffering, generally by a judicial or ecclesiastical authority, for the purpose of persuasion or punishment. The majority of the time, this unpleasant therapy has a purpose. It could involve attempting to persuade someone to confess to a crime, offer information, or receive punishment for their transgressions. Sometimes the torturer does it only for their own enjoyment. Countless individuals have been victims of incredibly violent crimes. Both humans and animals can be tortured. Like people, animals experience pain. All living beings must be accorded equal treatment and compassion in general.

Torture was once regarded as both morally and legally permissible. There is archaeological evidence of torture from the Early Neolithic in Europe. Historical accounts of Achaemenid Persia and Assyria include references to torture. Torture was used as a tool of punishment and in legal proceedings. A few historians distinguished between torturing and inflicting harsh penalties. One of the most effective methods for getting someone to reveal the truth was thought to be torture. It was considered a fitting penalty and a deterrent to anyone committing the same crimes again. It was a useful tactic in the past, although it was seen as harsh by many. Nonetheless, there were limitations on the permitted techniques. In Europe, the rack and strappado were the standard techniques.
