Applicants should use the online tools provided by their preferred courier service to monitor their packages. The processing time for passport renewal applications begins when we receive your application materials, not when you mail them to us.
Eligibility Criteria
All adult U.S. citizens who are eligible may renew their passports (Form DS-82) by mail and pay the renewal fee via Pay.gov.
You are eligible to renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82 if you can affirm the following:
- My most recent U.S. passport book can be submitted by mail with my renewal application;
- When my most recent passport book was issued, I was at least 16 years old.
- My most recent U.S. passport book was issued to me less than fifteen years ago.
- The validity of my most recent U.S. passport book was ten years from issuance to expiration;
- My most recent U.S. passport book was issued in my current name (or I can document my name change by submitting a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order with my passport application); and I currently reside in India and/or have a valid Indian mailing address.
If you are eligible to renew by mail, no in-person appointment is required. If you do not meet these requirements, you must register for a new passport using Form DS-11 and schedule an appointment to submit your application in person at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi or one of the Consulates General in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, or Mumbai.
Typically, renewing a passport by mail takes approximately four weeks. If you have an imminent need for international travel, we may be able to issue you a passport with limited validity; please schedule an appointment. Be prepared to provide documentation of your itinerary or urgent travel needs. If you need an appointment sooner than what is available online, email the appropriate Embassy or Consulate. Please include your intended travel itinerary, a copy of the bio-data page of your passport, and the subject line “Emergency Passport” in your email.
