The Chavang Kut Festival’s history

One of the folktales surrounding this celebration states that it is the Menashes’ version of Thanksgiving. One of the twelve tribes of Israel that were exiled when the Assyrians invaded the northern kingdom of Israel is the Menashe.

The clan had to cross the Red Sea on their journey, and as thanks for a safe passage, they celebrated Kut. Other traditions suggest that it dates back to a time when people worshipped nature rather than gods, before other sermons ever existed.

In the state of Mizoram, which lies next door, the Mizo people mostly celebrate the Chavang Kut holiday with Chapchar Kut. They frequently get mixed up. Between 1450 and 1700 AD, Chapcha Kut is thought to have originated in a hamlet named Suai Pui. The hunter’s empty-handed return to the village marked the beginning of the festivity. Since then, Suai Pui Village has hosted other festivals and invited neighbouring villages to participate.

The festival’s celebration, however, drastically decreased in succeeding decades as a result of outside influences and British colonialism. But when it was reintroduced in 1962, it also had a significant influence on the Chavankut festival in Manipur, inspiring people to celebrate it once more with fervour and love. Christian groups initially opposed the celebration strongly, but as more of these tribes converted to Christianity, the festival overcame the opposition and developed into a highly passionate and enthusiastic cultural event.
