Giving Tuesday 2023: Giving Tuesday comes Every year, on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, people use the opportunity to begin the holiday season by giving back to their community. Giving Tuesday is a day set aside to benefit the community, whether it be through monetary donations or volunteerism.
History
In partnership with the United Nations Foundation, the 92nd Street Y of New York established Giving Tuesday in 2012. The holiday was officially announced in September 2012, two months before the first Giving Tuesday, which took place on November 27, 2012. Mashable, a technology website, made the announcement. The goal of the day is to inspire people and businesses to behave in the same way as Black Friday and Cyber Monday developed a framework for stores to sell items.
The Washington Post, the White House’s official blog, ABC News, and the “Huffington Post” all covered Giving Tuesday shortly before and after November 27, 2012. Forbes also took use of the occasion to release a guide on efficient giving.
Mashable collaborated with Google+ in 2013 to host a ‘hangout-a-thon’ for Giving Tuesday. Many charity information websites, including “The Chronicle of Philanthropy” and Charity Navigator, covered the holiday. An article in “The Chronicle of Philanthropy” highlighted a donation to GiveDirectly by Good Ventures, Google’s hangout-a-thon, and matching funds announced by the Case Foundation. With nearly 7,000 NGOs participating, charitable contributions on contributions Tuesday in 2013 was roughly double that of 2012.
For the 2018 holiday season, Facebook and PayPal announced that they would match up to $7 million in donations to US NGOs on a first-come, first-served basis. The match limit was reached after only an hour, with a statement claiming that the contest was completed in seconds. On Giving Tuesday, Facebook raised $125 million, the most for a single day on the platform.
