• They fast or eat only one meal a day during this period, and they take miraculous baths in the hallowed rivers.
• Jain monks perform penance and spiritual exercise by staying in their ashrams.
• The teachings and philosophy of Lord Mahavira are adhered to and implemented with great devotion in Jainism.
• During Chaturmas, when the period is auspicious, Jain devotees worship the Lord and perform various religious rites with great enthusiasm.
• They sanitise and decorate their homes in order to attract purity and uplifting spirits.
• Alms, charity, and donations are also offered in order to atone for all crimes and create good karma.
Significance
A four-month period starting on Ashadhi Purnima and concluding on Kartik Purnima is referred to as Chaturmas or Chaumas.
Since this four-month period is regarded as India’s monsoon season, Chaumasi Chaudas is also referred to as Varsha Vaas.
Because of the rainy monsoon season, there is an abundance of vegetation and wildlife in the surroundings. According to Jainism, animals and plants can feel pain and happiness just like people do, hence the idea of ahimsa, or nonviolence, is not exclusive to people. They regard all living things, including plants, animals, and microbes, as having multiple senses and emotions.
Significance of the vrat
An important aspect of Jainism is Ahimsa, or nonviolence. During these four months of Chaumas, Jain sages abstain from travel to protect the mute plants and animals from humans. Jain individuals, especially monks, are recommended to stay inside and focus on prayer and meditation for the good of everybody.
Chaumasi Chaudas takes place during the wet season. At this time of year, the land appears to be covered in an abundance of greenery. With a diverse range of plants and animals nearby, nature is at its finest. Because Jainism places a strong emphasis on rigorous non-violence (Ahimsa Paramo Dharmah), its adherents are advised not to travel at this time to prevent damage from human movements to the plants and animals. The religious leaders and sages would gather at one spot to conduct prayers, partake in religious activities, and have spiritual conversations. Therefore, the four months of these festivities are dedicated to spiritual growth, worship, charitable giving, and auspicious activities.
Paryushana
A significant event known as Paryushana also takes place during the Chaumasi Chaudas era. One of the main Jain holidays that emphasises the importance of asking others for forgiveness is this one. Kshamavani Diwas, the last day of Paryushan, is when Jains send each other greeting cards and texts apologising for whatever injuries they may have inadvertently or willfully caused. The most crucial thing to realise in this situation is that Jainism, more than any other religion, upholds the concept of Ahimsa, or non-violence, and as such, its adherents are expected to refrain from injuring others in their thoughts, words, or deeds. As a result, Chaumasi Chaudas’ festival and related activities serve to uphold the religion’s lofty values among its adherents.
Chaumasi Chaudas also centres on Jains’ social and cultural lives. In addition to social events, the period of Chaumasi Chaudas promotes a variety of cultural, religious, and spiritual activities and the principles of sharing, caring, and forgiving. Thus, it is impossible to undervalue the festival’s multifarious significance.
