Navpatrika Puja 2023: The first day of Durga Puja, commonly referred to as Maha Saptami, is Navpatrika Puja. Hinduism holds that calling upon a deity’s spirit necessitates the use of a living medium. Devotees can communicate with and offer respect to their deity through this living medium. Goddess Durga was invoked on the Bilva Tree or a limb of it on Bilva Nimantran Day before receiving an invitation to a puja for the next day.
Goddess Durga is invoked in Navpatrika, a collection of nine plants, on the day of Maha Saptami. Bundling nine different plants, including the branch from the Bilva tree from the day before, produces navpatrika. Additionally, the Navpatrika receives a ceremonial wash in a body of water, ideally a river. On the right side of the image of Goddess Durga, it is then put on a wooden seat and covered with a red or orange cloth.

Rituals
As the very first day of the Durga Puja celebration, the Navpatrika Puja or Nabapatrika Puja ritual is also widely known as Maha Saptami. According to Hindu doctrine, a medium is necessary to summon the spirit of Goddess Durga. Additionally, worshippers can communicate with the Gods and Goddesses through the living mediums. These intermediaries facilitate communication with and worship of the divine. Goddess Durga is called in the Bilva tree’s branches on the day of Bilva Nimantran, and only Durga Puja is then conducted.

- The Kachu plant, also known as Kacchi, represents the Goddess Kali.

Navpatrika Puja Significance
Goddess Durga is invoked in a group of nine different plants on the eve of Maha Saptami, and as a result, this day is known as Navpatrika. The nine different plants are combined with a branch of the bilva tree to create navpatrika. The Navpatrika is next given a holy bath in the holy body of water, decorated with orange or red fabric, and then it is placed on a wooden plank in Goddess Durga’s right side.
- The auspicious rite of Mahasnan serves as the beginning of the Maha Saptami Puja ritual.
- In order to perform the Mahasnan ceremony, the devotees position a mirror so that Goddess Durga can be seen reflected in it.
- By performing many puja rituals, the Goddess Durga reflected in the mirror is given a sacred and ritualistic bath.

Symbolism and Legend:
According to a Hindu myth, the buffalo demon Mahishasura received a blessing that rendered him invincible after he prayed to Lord Brahma for many years. Nobody could kill him, not even God. Mahishasura started destroying the planet once he gained control. He started killing people and posed a danger to the gods. Goddess Durga, a divine feminine force, manifested as a result of the gods’ combined efforts in order to destroy Mahishasura. Durga Puja commemorates the triumph of Good over Evil.
Another well-known myth claims that during Sharda Navratri, Goddess Durga travels to her mother’s home.
